Now accepting applications for the Jim Schmidt Memorial Scholarship

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS JUNE 13, 2023

Do you have a high school senior heading out for higher education this fall?  Have your student apply for the NALC Branch 331 Jim Schmidt Memorial Scholarship. 

DETAILS

· The scholarship is a one time, one year award.  The award amount is to be determined by merit, number of applicants and Local 331 treasury budget.

· The award money can be used for required higher education fees including, but not limited to; tuition, room  & board, and books.

· Award money will be deposited (by August 1st of the same year) directly to the recipient's account at the institution of choice, to be drawn upon under the rules and regulations which the institution has established for handling school scholarship funds.  Should the institution of the recipient's choice NOT have such administrative mechanisms in place, receipts for expenditure of funds will be required.

· If  conditions require an interruption in schooling, recipient must state reason(s) in writing to the scholarship committee and request that scholarship be held in abeyance.

· If parent union member is suspended by the local branch or enters into supervision, scholarship will be canceled.

 

ELIGIBILITY

· Applicant must be the natural born, adoptive or in legal custody of an active or retired NALC member letter carrier.  Also step-children residing a minimum of 50% of time with the member parent may apply.

· Member parent must be in good standing with the union 12 months prior to the application.  "Good standing" is defined as dues paying and working in the carrier craft at USPS.

· Applicant must be a high school senior and registered at an accredited institution of higher learning of the same year.

 

REQUIREMENTS

· The member parent must pick up an application from the Recording Secretary  AT the monthly meeting.

· All applicants must take the SAT or the ACT in either the junior or senior year, and a copy of the original printout of the scores from the Admissions Testing Program of the college board must be submitted.

· Applicants must submit high school transcripts.

· Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from either high school teachers or counselors.

· Applicants must submit a one page composition on their goals and objectives in attending the institution of their choice.

· All required materials must be submitted to the scholarship committee by June 13, 2023.
